PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Judith’s practice focuses on providing comprehensive psychoeducational assessments for children experiencing academic difficulties.

For example, students who:

· Are having difficulty with reading or math

· Do not understand what they read

· Are having trouble learning letter names and sounds

· Are unable to keep up with schoolwork

· Have trouble remembering or following directions

· Are having trouble paying attention in class

· Are disorganized and do not complete work

A psychoeducational evaluation can help address these concerns and determine how best to support learning at home and at school.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

During a psychoeducational assessment, a psychologist collects information about a student's functioning in order to better understand the student's strengths and areas of need. The process involves:

INTERVIEWS

  • An interview with the parents or guardians to discuss the child’s developmental history, family background, social-emotional/behavioral functioning at home and school, and academic history
  • An interview with the child's teacher(s)

TESTING

  • A number of tests are administered to assess the following: intellectual functioning, academic achievement, memory, attention, and information processing. The testing sessions are typically undertaken over two days and are approximately 2-3 hours in length.

RATING SCALES

  • Rating scales are typically sent to parents/guardians and teachers to assess social-emotional and behavioral functioning at home and school.

REPORT FEEDBACK

  • A final session is undertaken with the parents/guardians to discuss the assessment results and recommendations for home and school. A detailed written report is provided.
  • An additional feedback session with school personnel is available upon request.
